Summary:
Introduction. Reducing the spread of HIV-infection and blood-borne viral hepatitis among youth remains a relevant issue in Russia and its constituent entities. Diverse awareness raising and education activities with implementation of up-to date forms and methods are conducted regularly. However, it is necessary to have data on youth awareness levels on HIV-infection and viral hepatitis to purposely plan preventive measures and utilize authoritative sources of information for youth. Objective of the research – reveal levels of awareness on HIV-infection and blood-borne viral hepatitis among youth of the Jewish autonomous region and define relevant direction and possible technologies of awareness-raising and educational work for prevention of these infections. Materials and methods. Students of secondary vocational education and first-year students of higher educational institutions of the Birobidzhan city and Amurzet village of the Jewish autonomous region were the object of the research. A random sampling technique was used to perform an anonymous structured survey among the students. It included 12 questions with 3 to 9 response options. Results and discussion. The level of awareness on routs of transmission of the infections was revealed. Prevention priorities against contracting infections and sources of information that are authoritative for teenagers and youth were identified. Despite a certain level of knowledge that youth demonstrated, some of them are at risk of contracting HIV/blood-borne viral hepatitis. Stigmatizing behavior towards people living with HIV was detected among youth as well as insufficient knowledge on a necessity of regular testing as a preventive measure. Conclusion. Practical recommendations regarding the issue of planning relevant awareness raising and education preventive measures based on the retrieved data were described. These measures are aimed at decreasing the risk of contracting infectious diseases among students of the territory.
