Summary:
Introduction. In the context of demographic aging, volunteerism, including that carried out by medical students as part of educational outreach, is considered a significant resource in gerontology and geriatrics. The introduction of artificial intelligence offers additional opportunities for optimizing volunteer practice in geriatric institutions. Engaging young people in volunteering helps strengthen intergenerational bonds, socialize older adults, and improve their psychoemotional well-being, which aligns with the World Health Organization's 2021-2030 goals. Research on the intersection of artificial intelligence and volunteerism in gerontology is scarce, making this study relevant. Objective. To substantiate the effectiveness of using artificial intelligence by volunteers in educational outreach to older adults in a geriatric institution. Materials and Methods. The study was conducted at a geriatric facility. Two groups were formed: 24 participants, with an average age of 69.3 ± 3.3 years, attending classes at the School for the Elderly. Inclusion criteria: age ≥ 65 years, at least one month of attendance at the School for the Elderly, no severe cognitive impairment, basic smartphone or tablet skills, readiness to learn, and signed informed consent. Student volunteers included 12 individuals planning to educate older adults on the basics of using artificial intelligence tools using a chatbot, a version of GigaChat. Classes were held for 12 weeks according to a developed program. The effectiveness was assessed dynamically, at baseline and 3 months after the training using the MMSE "Objective Assessment of Cognitive Abilities" scale (in points), the 10-point VAS "Subjective Assessment of Cognitive Functioning", the "Assessment of Psychological Stress" indicator (according to the PSM-25 scale, in points), and the "Assessment of Mood" indicator (according to the SAN questionnaire). To assess students' readiness for volunteer work, a questionnaire developed on the basis of the "Freedom from Age "KPAINS" questionnaire was used. Results and discussion. The study revealed a statistically significant improvement in the subjective state of cognitive functioning. Thus, among men, the proportion of people with high self-esteem increased from 33.3% to 66.7%, and among women - from 41.7% to 58.3%. A decrease in psychological stress was revealed according to the PSM-25 scale; after completion of the study, 66.7% of men and women reported low stress levels. According to the SAN questionnaire, communication and interaction with volunteers after the classes led to improved well-being, activity, and mood, reflecting an overall increase in functional and emotional well-being. The study revealed a significantly positive trend in the student volunteers' competence. Conclusions. The study results confirmed the effectiveness of using artificial intelligence tools in working with older adults as part of volunteer activities.
