Summary:
Introduction: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a common disease of the vestibular system and the most common cause of systemic vertigo. According to world data, BPPV has a significant impact on the healthcare system, while its accurate mass diagnostics is fraught with difficulties associated with an extensive list of pathologies for which differential diagnosis of BPPV is necessary.
Purpose: To explore the statistics of the BPPV detection in the Rostov region for the period from 2014 to 2024, to analyze the changes and compare them with indicators from the world literature.
Materials and methods: Statistics from the database of the territorial fund of medical insurance of the Rostov region are investigated. Data on identified cases of BPPV were studied, the sex and age structure and dynamics of morbidity for the period from 2014 to 2024 were described. Statistics on the specialties of doctors who detect this disease have been studied.
Results: In the 10 years from 2014 to 2024, the number of detected cases of BPPV in the Rostov region increased by more than 5 times, both in absolute and specific terms. Most of the diagnoses (about 85%) are made by neurologists. The specific incidence of BPPV throughout the region in 2014 was 1.81 (per 100,000 population), in 2024 - 9.58 (per 100,000 population). In the city of Rostov-on-Don, the incidence in 2014 was 5.37 (per 100,000 population), in 2024 - 24.53 (per 100,000 population).
Discussion: The increase in indicators is associated with a significant increase in the detection of the disease, which is due to organizational measures in the region's healthcare system. The effectiveness of the diagnosis of BPPV in the region has now approached the global level, while it is in the lower part of the range of values described in the world literature.
Conclusion: In the Rostov region, over the period from 2014 to 2024, the detection rate of BPPV increased significantly, it can be considered an achievement of high-quality organizational measures in the region's healthcare system. The number of identified patients has become comparable to the level described in the world literature, however, it corresponds to the lower limit of the range at which the real incidence rate is assumed to be. Further study of this issue and steps to improve the healthcare system are necessary in order to build on the success achieved in improving the diagnosis of BPPV in the Rostov region.
