Summary:
Introduction. The problems of dental health of the population and its prevention currently remain an important topic on the agenda of healthcare systems both in Russia and abroad. Assessment of the epidemiological picture and medical and social characteristics of patients in dental practice based on the calculation and analysis of the DMF dental index is an important tool that allows, based on an assessment of a number of aspects, to form a forecast for the further development of pathology and make decisions to improve the organization of dental care to the population.
Purpose: to present the medical and social characteristics of the patients of the university dental clinic in modern conditions.
Materials and methods. The main research base was the Dental University Clinic of the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation (Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University), Moscow. The dental clinic, being an integral part of the university clinical complex, is, on the one hand, a modern multidisciplinary medical unit, on the other, a platform for scientific and educational activities. The medical and social characteristics of patients are represented by an assessment of attendance and attendance at the university dental clinic for 2022-2025 (for the clinic as a whole and for the orthopedic department in particular), including differentiation by gender and age structure of patients for whom the main indicators of dental health were calculated based on the dental index of the DMF. Analytical and statistical research methods were used.
Results and discussion. There is a steady growth in the number of referrals (from 42.3 thousand to 55.3 thousand) and visits (from 79.5 thousand to 92.5 thousand) of patients to the university dental clinic. The gender structure of the patient flow remains stable with a slight gender imbalance (the predominance of female patients is about 60%). Orthopedic care accounts for a small proportion (less than 2%) of the total number of clinic visits. The structure of the clinic's patient flow is generally dominated by young and middle-aged people, while there is an increase in referrals in all age categories. There is a steady quantitative predominance of women in all age groups, especially noticeable in the older age groups. The age structure is a key factor differentiating the overall flow of the clinic and the flow of the orthopedic department. The general clinic mainly serves people of working age (18-59 years old), while orthopedic care is aimed at patients over 60 years old.
Conclusion. For the clinic as a whole, the dental DMF index increased from 14.22±0.33 in 2022 to 16.42±0.27 in 2025, with a uniform increase in all components. In the orthopedic department of the clinic, the DMF dental index also increased from 15.17±0.30 in 2022 to 17.21±0.25 in 2025, with a uniform increase in all components. The orthopedic department concentrates patients of all age groups with more severe forms of dental pathology, which is manifested in higher DMF values, especially components "D" and "F". This confirms its role as a division of the clinic that provides care in the late, advanced stages of dental morbidity.
