COGNITIVE-DENTAL SYNDROME: RATIONALE FOR AN INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH IN GERIATRIC PRACTICE

Summary:
Introduction. The ageing of the population is accompanied by an increase in the prevalence of age-related conditions, among which cognitive impairments and Geriatric Oral Syndrome are of particular importance. These conditions are closely interrelated and significantly impair the quality of life of older adults, which necessitates a comprehensive approach.
Aim: To conduct a comprehensive study of the relationship between the status of the dentoalveolar system and cognitive functions in elderly and senile patients to substantiate the concept of Cognitive-Dental Syndrome (CDS).
Materials and Methods. The study included 208 patients divided into two age groups: Group 1 (60-74 years, n=132) and Group 2 (75-89 years, n=76). A standardized protocol was used to assess dental status (DMFT index, OHI-S), cognitive functions (MMSE, Clock Drawing Test), and depressive symptoms (Geriatric Depression Scale).
Results. The study revealed a high prevalence of Cognitive-Dental Syndrome in the senile age group, with a significant deterioration in all parameters compared to the elderly group. Dental health indicators were worse in Group 2: DMFT index 21.3±8.1 vs. 14.9±5.8 (p
