Summary:
Introduction. Sensory impairments are part of the screening tools for frailty, have a high prevalence among older people, but have been practically not analyzed in patients with frailty syndrome.
The aim of the study to compare the prevalence of frailty depending on the presence of sensory impairment.
Material and methods. The study was conducted among 354 subjects. Frailty was assessed using the Fried scale questionnaire. Data on socio-demographic characteristics, health status and behavior were collected. Analyses were performed using the software «Statistica 10.0». The study was conducted in compliance with ethical standards and the principles set out in the Declaration of Helsinki
The results of the study. The most common difficulty reported by respondents was sensory (58.1%), followed by cognitive, physical and nutritional (15.3%, 12.7% and 1.9% respectively). The prevalence of frailty syndrome was 19.5% (95% CI: 15.2%-23.5%). Most participants who were diagnosed with frailty syndrome reported problems with vision or hearing. The main factors associated with frailty syndrome were female gender, older age, very poor health, depression, low weight (body mass index ≤18.5 kg/m2) and higher levels of comorbidities.
Conclusion. The inclusion of sensory deficits in the definition of frailty syndrome has a significant impact on the number of patients identified with frailty syndrome.
