PSYCHO-HYGIENIC ASSESSMENT OF EMOTIONAL BURNOUT SYNDROME IN MEDICAL STUDENTS

Summary:
Introduction. Modern higher education makes high demands on students, especially in medical schools, where academic load is combined with emotional tension and stressful situations. One of the serious consequences of these factors is mental burnout, which can have a significant impact on academic performance, professional motivation and psycho-emotional health of students [1]. Objective. To conduct a psychohygienic assessment of the prevalence of emotional burnout syndrome among students at a medical university. Materials and Methods. A study of 1110 students of the medical faculty of Perm State Medical University named after academician E.A. Wagner (1-6 courses, 17-24 years old) was conducted. The level of mental burnout was assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) test including three scales according to the stages of development: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and reduction of personal achievements. Statistical processing was performed in Statistica 6.0 program. Results. The conducted research showed that more than a half of students (51,89±1,49 cases per 100 students) demonstrate expressed signs of mental burnout. The lowest level of emotional burnout syndrome prevalence is observed in the 1st year students, amounting to 38.6±3.32 cases per 100 students. In the following from the 2nd course and up to graduation there is a persistent development of emotional burnout syndrome in the range from 50,24± 3,48 to 61,54±4,77 cases per 100 students. It was found out that women have higher level of burnout in comparison with young men with level, making, accordingly, 53,69±1,73 and 43,46±2,95 cases per 100 students, respectively. It is revealed that students combining study with work experience burnout more often (56,99±2,52 cases per 100 students) in comparison with non-working students (47,79±1,86 cases per 100 students). It is also noted that the most common stage of reduction of personal achievements with the level of 74,51±1,31 cases per 100 students. Discussion. The problem of mental burnout among medical students requires special attention, because it combines high academic load with emotional stress. The revealed regularities indicate the necessity of timely prevention and psychological support, especially for senior students and students combining study and work. Gender differences also matter: girls demonstrate a higher level of burnout compared to boys. The obtained data are consistent with modern research, emphasizing the importance of developing special support programs for students from risk groups. Conclusion. The conducted study showed high prevalence of mental burnout among medical students (51.89±1.49 cases per 100 students). Risk groups were identified: girls and students combining study and work. The most pronounced stage of reduction of personal achievements is 74,51±1,31 cases per 100 students. The obtained data emphasize the necessity of implementation of prevention and psychological support programs for medical students.
