Summary:
Introduction. High blood pressure is a key metabolic risk factor for preventable mortality. At the same time, measures to promote a healthy lifestyle in modern society can partially contain the epidemic of arterial hypertension (AH). Consequently, epidemiological monitoring of hypertension prevalence is a major task of public health in the modern world. The aim of the study is to analyze the data on the prevalence of hypertension in Russia and its regions, and to compare the results with the WHO’s global estimates and previously published results of Russian studies. Materials and methods. The prevalence of hypertension was calculated with the data from the «Selective monitoring of the health status of the population» by the Russian Federal State Statistics Service (Rosstat) for 2021–2024. Analytical methods included descriptive statistical analysis and age standardization. Results. The average prevalence of hypertension in Russia among the population of 15 years and older in 2021–2024 was 40.8%, showing a gradual decline from 43.9% in 2021 to 38.0% in 2024. Among the population under the age of 50, the prevalence of hypertension is slightly higher among men, and in people over 50 years old and older it was higher among women. The age-standardized prevalence of hypertension in Russia averaged 35.9%, which is slightly higher than the global average (33.1%) and that of high-income countries (32.0%), yet somewhat lower than in the WHO European Region (36.9%). Discussion. In this study, the prevalence of hypertension for 2021-2024 in Russia was calculated for the first time on Rosstat data with a representative sample covering 85 regions of Russia. The calculated age-standardized prevalence rates of hypertension match quite well with the global and European averages. The decrease in hypertension prevalence in Russia in 2021-2024 was probably due to growing the population's commitment to healthy lifestyle. At the same time, the results obtained may indicate that the WHO’s published figures for the hypertension prevalence of hypertension in Russia (47%), based on earlier studies, are irrelevant. Conclusion. The results of the study show a consistent decrease in the prevalence of hypertension in Russia in 2021–2024 in almost all population groups, which may be caused by an increase in adherence to healthy lifestyle.
