Summary:
Background. Worldwide, about a third of students suffer from affective disorders, which affects social interaction, general well-being, and motivation to learn. Aim. The purpose of this study is to analyze the prevalence of depression and anxiety among students in Peoples' Friendship University of Russia after Patrice Lumumba (RUDN University), taking into account social factors. Materials and methods. An anonymous survey (177 people) of RUDN University students from Russia, Africa, Central Asia and the Middle East was conducted using Google Forms in February 2024. Depression and anxiety were identified using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS). The statistical analysis was carried out in the SPSS v program.22 according to quantitative and nominal (estimated) scales by appropriate methods and criteria. The decision tree is built using the CRT method, limited to 3 levels without forced introduction with a measure of heterogeneity according to the Ginny criterion. Results and discussion. The median score corresponded to subclinical depression (8), and anxiety was normal (6). The norm was found in 49.2% of depression and 67.8% of anxiety, 36.7% on both scales. The risk group with subclinical signs was 32.2% (16.9% for depression, 10.2% for anxiety, and 5.1% for a combination of conditions). 5.6% of students have clinical signs of depression and anxiety in the group with clinical signs (31.1%). The proportion of people without signs of depression is highest among Africans (65.8%). Students from the Middle East and Central Asia have fewer (50.1%) and Russians have significantly fewer (25.7%). Among men from the Middle East and Central Asia, the proportion of people without signs of depression is 85.7% versus 46.7% for women; Russians – 50.0% versus 21.7%. Conclusions. The most important social factors of depression include the student's region of origin, gender and year of study. For students from the Russian Federation, the Middle East and Central Asia the maximum importance of the risk of depression is due to belonging to the female sex, for students from Africa – less than a year of study (1st and 3rd year).
