Summary:
Introduction. Ensuring the population has access to quality medical care in Russia directly depends on medical organizations being staffed with qualified specialists. However, in 2022, physician staffing levels decreased, leading to increased workloads on current medical workers and a decline in the quality of care. Simultaneously, the growing proportion of older age groups in the population (about 20% of the population is over 65 years old as of the beginning of 2023) increases the demand for medical services, intensifying the burden on the healthcare system. In these conditions, working pensioners play a special role in mentorship, as their extensive professional experience and deep knowledge are invaluable resources for young specialists. The purpose of the study: To assess the prospects of the economic and social feasibility of mentorship as a method to reduce staff shortages in a multidisciplinary hospital setting. Materials and Methods. Anonymized data on the accrued average monthly wages of 256 employees (201 women, 55 men) over 60 years old at SPb SGBHI “CMB No. 2” for 2024 were used as materials for assessing the economic factor. To evaluate the social factor, the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-30) was used. A survey was conducted among 52 pensioners, including 27 working at CMB No. 2 (average age 68.6 years) and 25 already retired (average age 69.3 years). Results. It was found that the average monthly salary of employees in the older age group (over 65 years) was lower compared to the younger cohort (up to 65 years) across all job categories; however, these differences did not reach statistical significance (p > 0.05). Based on the assessment of the social factor, it was revealed that the level of depression among non-working pensioners was statistically significantly higher than that of working pensioners (median on the GDS-30 scale: 16 (13.5–18.0) versus 6.5 (0–14.0); p
